Potty Training Update...

I've thought of writing an update on our potty training experience for some time now. There wasn't much to say since my last 'report'. We sort of stalled on the whole 'going' part so there wasn't much to do. I will admit it was getting very frustrating for me. I had no intention of changing a three year old 's diapers, in fact I was dead set against it. That won't be me! I don't understand why anyone would 'let' their child be in diapers for that long. Yeah I said all the condescending things you can think of because I didn't know. I didn't know my child.

Ever since the beginning my girl has been intent on doing it right. She won't attempt it until she's confident she can do it right. Starting from rolling over right to potty training she had to be certain and every time I'd get frustrated. Why wasn't she sitting up by herself yet? Why wasn't she crawling? How come it took her so long to walk? Why wasn't she talking yet? You'd think by this point I'd realize my kid has her own time table and that I can't impose mine on her. I can encourage her and teach her but I need to be patient that she'll get it when she gets it. She's such a perfectionist she beats herself up if she does it 'wrong'.

So potty training consisted of us talking about it every day. She'd follow me into the bathroom when I'd go (I'm a mom I can't even find privacy in the bathroom lol) we'd talk about it every time I'd change her and she seemed to mostly understand the concept but couldn't quite believe that she was capable of such a thing. I tried everything to get her to stay on the potty until she actually went. One morning I decided that getting her to sit on the potty in the morning, while she watched her morning cartoon, with her chocolate milk might be the most relaxed setting I could get her in so that she might actually go. Finally after a few mornings of trying she actually did go, very little, but she went and she was so proud of herself she wanted to try again later that day when she went some more. Then her next goal was keeping her pull-up dry for the afternoon and now she's trying to keep it dry all day. We still haven't reached that goal but at least she's trying. :)

I don't know how it happened honestly. Last week if you would have told me she'd be telling me she has to pee right now I'd have laughed at you. I was pretty convinced we'd be only having headway when she was ready for kindergarten. I'm slightly dramatic when it comes to these things and patience may be a virtue but I find it mostly a pain. So right now we have made great strides in our training. I find that every time I think I'm going to be teaching her something she ends up teaching me.

We are by no means done with training but I'm feeling a little bit more optimistic about not having to purchase diapers for a teenager ;)

Potty Training Update...

So my wonderful daughter is three now and still in diapers. There's a part of me that actually feels like a failure. I know this is absolutely ridiculous (please tell me this is absolutely ridiculous!). I can't help it though I feel like this reflects on my ability to teach. However, I have to get over that because this training thing is not about me. I am just here to help her learn to do this. It is about her so I need to let it go and just let her be who she is. Honestly the person she is becoming is so amazing I don't know why I'm worried. She's going to learn to use the toilet I just need to give it time.

In fact, my frustrated rantings just make her more upset and more worried about pleasing me. This does not help her to relax and use the toilet. The other day she was wearing her bathing suit in the backyard without a diaper. She peed and just about flipped out. She acted as though she was going to be in trouble for peeing. Goodness she's in the backyard in a bathing suit and she's three...pretty sure everyone has done this. However, it gave me insight into how her mind is working. She is comfortable using the diaper. She knows how to use the diaper. The concept of using the toilet is foreign and scary. Put on top of that the fact that mom got frustrated when she peed on the floor I can see why the whole idea is terrifying.

So we are taking a step back. She is going to sit on the potty throughout the day. No pressure to do anything except sit on it. Just to become comfortable with the it. I'm going to praise her for trying. I'm going to tell her that I know she can do it and that it's okay to do it when she's ready. If she merely puts a little tinkle in the there then it's stickers and party's all around. If she goes in the diaper I'm going to say that this is okay and that I know she'll go on the potty when she's comfortable with it. This isn't about her trying to piss me off. She's not resisting using the toilet as some elaborate scheme to get me. It's new, she's scared and she wants to do it right. So I'm going to give her that opportunity.

She'll do it. In her time she will. And I'll be there with a song and dance when she does. Cause my kid is her own person and I'm not going to force her to be otherwise. My job is to help her be the best version of herself that she can be.

Now that I've written it down I'm going to read this when I get annoyed to remind myself of the overall goal here. :) Now I need to get make to working on my other postings. :)

More Daughterisms

A common theme in conversation with my DD is for her to ask for something say a cookie. Then I say "Would you like a cookie?" and she says "Okay!" Like it was my idea and she's just going along with it...lol Now she is imparting what she wants onto everyone else, including the cat.

For example if the cat comes into her room and DD doesn't want her there she says "Miss Mao doesn't want to be in my room!" Which is funny because clearly the cat DOES want to be in the room it's just DD that doesn't want her there LOL

She also remembers EVERYTHING so for the love of sanity if you happen to introduce something new to her you need to tell me what it is, because she will talk about it days later and DH or I will stare at her desperate to figure out what she's saying. For example once when my mom was talking to her on the phone she was telling DD about some of the things they were going to bring for her this summer. Among those items is a red table and yellow chair. Now I knew about this so could comply with DD when she decided to tell me over and over about what she was getting then say 'but not yet!' Because I had told her she had to wait.

Follow me? So DH is hanging with her one evening and they are chatting. I'm in the kitchen and I can hear DD telling her daddy about the red table and yellow chair. He agrees that is very exciting but I can tell he has NO idea what she is talking about. Then she keeps telling him 'but not yet.' I had to fill him in because she was getting frustrated that he didn't know. lol It's very funny for us but it can get very frustrating for her because she really wants us to understand what she is saying. She just keeps leaving out the vital information, such as where she got the info or what it means. Haha

One is never done learning to speak toddler. :)

Potty Training

One year, I’d completely lost my bearings trying to follow potty training instruction from a psychiatric expert. I was stuck on step one, which stated without irony: ‘Before you begin, remove all stubbornness from the child’.
Mary Kay Blakely

Wow this quote just about killed me. If anyone can figure out how to remove stubbornness from a child you just let me know. Mine is determined to go on the potty on her and only her terms. I'm not the type to be militant about milestones so my DD is approaching 3 still in diapers. I'm sure there are some of you shaking your heads or even worse heading to the comment section to give me a metric crapload (natch) of advice on how to potty train 'right'.

I'll stop you right now. I don't want it. I appreciate the sentiment and I'm sure it worked for your Johnny poop pants or Janey pee pee. That's all fine and good. I applaud you that your child was not only out of diapers at 14 months but giving lectures on how to use the potty by 16 months. I get it, you are superior at potty training. Feel free to take my kid and try and get her to actually use the toilet. Go ahead I dare you. If you manage to train her then I am proven wrong and absolved of the torture of training. Win win I say ;)

The sarcastic diatribe is not meant to offend anyone who has shared their potty training experience with me or offered advice it's just my frustrating way of saying NOTHING WORKS! LoL Here's what she will do. She'll sit on the potty quite happily most times. In fact she'll sit there for as long as half an hour. Then promptly pee in her diaper the moment it's on. I tried a morning of putting her in panties. She'd pee a little bit on the floor then sit on the potty half an hour, rinse (literally) repeat. I got sick of it after the third or fourth time following her around the floor trying to tell her to stop so I could mop up the pee from the floor, her legs and her feet. I was done then and the diaper went back on. After her nap it was so full it's was beyond disgusting.

I know I just have to push through. Stop right there. I won't, there is nothing worth me running after my kid mopping up her excrement. Not gonna happen. I do it anyway in the diaper, how is this any different? I have no issue with cleaning up an accident after she's done the training, but there has got to be a better way to actually just get her to GO on the toilet. She's never let anything leave her body into that toilet. Not once. I'm convinced that the moment she does a light will go on and we can go from there. (In that instance I'm not so opposed to cleaning up after her because I know she can do it) The trick is getting her to actually go, I'm fairly certain she's terrified. And if I get intense at ALL it will shut down all functions in the lower half of her body. If she has to perform to make me happy, she just won't. (I know I know it's like she's MY kid or something, I can hear you laughing mom! Quit it! :)

So I'm talking about it. She HATES having her diaper changed so I'm trying to explain (without exasperation whenever I can) that if she actually used the potty I wouldn't have to change her. She seems to somewhat comprehend that but doesn't actually do the deed! I'm considering letting her spend a day outside in nothing to get her used to some feelings without anything to hold her back. Just gotta remember to lather on the sunscreen...I fear she'll just tighten up and release the moment she has a diaper or underwear on.

What is she so afraid of and how can I cure her of that? Scratch that don't answer, I don't want to know. Hmm I wonder where she gets her stubbornness from? ;)

Play Dates

Today was fun! Two dear friends came to visit me with their respective children and it was a good day! I mean it was loud and most of our conversations were interrupted but that's to be expected we're mothers of toddlers. The kids ran around DD's play area upstairs then we had some lunch then there was more running up and down the stairs (it's gotta be a kid thing I try to find the stairs exciting and I just can't!)

The cutest thing happened and I wish I could have gotten a better picture of it. They all decided to hold hands and walk through the house it was just so cute! Of course as soon as they saw me with the camera they decided to let go and pretend like nothing cute was going on but I knew better! Besides with the subjects it's all bound to be cute no matter how you look at it.

Another cute story, because they happen in spades around here. My BFF (Ya I just called you that :) is pregnant and we were telling DD that she had a baby in her tummy. Then as they were leaving she kept asking if I had one in my tummy to which I had to say "One day honey." Then of course she asked if Daddy had a baby in his tummy and wanted to have a baby in her tummy. To which I say, not for a LONG time please! Tonight as I was giving her her night cuddle she told me I should have a little sister in my tummy for her. I said I would do what I could. Honestly I couldn't make this up if I tried! :)

Since we moved her into her into her 'big girl bed' she's been sleeping better, it's also easier for me, if she wakes up at night I go in there crawl into bed with her cuddle her for a couple minutes then go back to bed...if I make sure not to trip up or down the stairs into my room I can do it with little to no waking up. :) Of course since we had visitors that meant her normal quiet time was a bit later. I swear to you their little bodies know when they've had enough! It's like a stinkin' switch. One minute she's playing like the happiest kid on the block and the next if a grain of sand is out of place it's the end of the world as we know it. (There are those of you who couldn't help but think 'and I feel fine' after you read that last sentence aren't there?)

She pitched a fit when they left because I dared to try and take off her shoes, she wanted to do it, then they got stuck and I had to do it. So of course our lovely visit ended with me giving half hearted smiles to my friends and trying desperately to calm my kid down. After they leave she looks at me through her sniffles and snot, 'Mommy I think I'm little tired.' Jeez ya think so kid, I hadn't noticed. *sigh* They are cute for a reason I'll tell ya that much.

Naturally she napped hard and woke up happier than a pig in...you know ;) I love being a mom, it's really never boring. Whenever it gets that way I'll try to work on a more interesting post, and possibly get some recipes up! :)

Domestic Diva

So apparently I like being domestic now that I'm kind of getting the hang of it. I don't have a routine down by any stretch of the imagination BUT I'm getting there and that's what counts. Last week was the first week that I made a healthy supper every night! I was so proud of myself. I know that probably sound ridiculous to those of you who do this on a weekly basis but trust me, if you know me, this is a feat. Especially since I'm married to mister chef guy...lol

This week I'm upping the ante by actually picking out some recipes BEFORE I go shopping then going out and getting the ingredients I need. I'm sure most of you are rolling your eyes at me thinking, duh, and this wasn't totally a revelation to me I just didn't think how much easier it was till I did it. Now I try to make something each day, dinner always and then sometimes a treat. Like yesterday I made a snack mix. Today I made cookies (my fave chocolate chip cookies) and tomorrow I'm gonna make strawberry/rhubarb crisp. And then the weekend will be spent running up and down my stairs to lose the weight from all that baking! Haha :)

DD loves to help me and whenever she does she has to wear her Starbucks apron. If I'm ever in the kitchen for longer than a few minutes she says 'Mommy can I stand on a chair and wear my apron and help you?' Helping usually consists of stirring flour and helping me dump ingredients into the bowl. She LOVES it! Plus she is constantly asking me what I'm doing (of course) so I get to cook while giving a play by play. It's like having my own cooking show for toddlers. LoL Or at least my toddler.

I'm not sure how long this will keep up because I'm still trying to incorporate all the other household chores. And lets be honest vacuuming isn't nearly as much fun as baking cookies. At least this is the case for me, if you really love to vacuum come on over to my house I'll happily let you vacuum for me.

This is the kind of thing I was looking forward to in regards to staying at home. Now I know that, for the most part, my shifts at Starbucks certainly weren't longer than 4.5 hours (except Saturday or Sunday), but you have no idea how much energy you need to be perky for that amount of time! So most of the day I'd be trying to hang out with DD and just get the basics done, now I feel like I can relax into the day. I'm sure it'll get hectic once I get DD involved in some activities outside the house, but for the summer I'm just gonna relax.

In other DD news we finally got her a big girl bed. I was so excited for her to have it and then so sad that my baby isn't in her crib anymore. Don't get me wrong she's a good 35 pounds so I'm not sad that I don't have to lift her in there anymore, but that was her first bed. I remember putting a tiny little infant in there and now my big girl is in her own bed. It's very thrilling and kind of sad at the same time. Now we need to tackle potty training and getting rid of the soother. I decided one milestone at a time though, if she gets overwhelmed it would all be a moot point. :p I'm sure I will have a ton of stories to share with potty training as well as frustrations so keep it tuned in...haha

Oh and if you want some recipes just let me know I'll try to randomly put them up in separate posts. :)

Daughterisms

I don't even know where to start here. I wanted to put some daughterisms but there are so many I think I'll just throw some in here just to lighten up the mood on my blog. So folks don't think I'm gonna talk about deep pain and healing the whole time...lol

My daughter is funny. Really she is here's an example. Yesterday myself, my sister in law, DD and my niece are all hanging out upstairs in DD's playroom. DD gets upset about something and starts whining, which never sounds good. I tell her to stop and talk to me in a normal voice. My sister in law also mentions to DD that when you are frustrated it's not good to whine and DD says: It's not? In that tone that lets us know she's actually shocked by this information. You mean you're telling me I can communicate my frustration without whining, I am at a loss! LoL It was funny.

Her classic 'ism' is something that is done on repeat throughout the day:
DD: Mommy?
Me: Yes hunny.
DD: What are you doing?
Answer example:
Me: I'm getting some sugar
DD: Mmm I love sugar
This can be interchanged with 'Daddy' instead of Mommy and it is literally on repeat throughout the day, she is constantly asking us what we are doing. It used to be 'What are you donan' but has now graduated to the actual word doing. Still being asked, constantly, all the time...in fact please don't ever ask me what I'm doing, I'm sick of answering it...lol

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it. -- Helen Keller

Healing is a slow process. It takes a lot of patience and endurance because in order to properly heal one must properly go through the pain. That's my own quote as far as I know. If I've learned anything in my life it's that dwelling on pain effects you way more and much longer than effectively dealing with the pain.

I was going to try and write another post that swings away from my miscarriage but it felt to me like I should probably talk about the healing process as well as the pain process. Then if anyone has a question or comment I'm all ears and perfectly willing to keep the conversation going if that's at all helpful. So let's talk healing...

Initially a band-aid was not going to do it. The wound left by the loss of my baby was too big to be covered by a mere strip of adhesive. My initial instinct was to dive into myself and just stay there crying about what I didn't have. I wanted to, I wanted to stay in bed for days not having to connect with the world or talk to anyone. Fortunately for me my DD made this impossible. No matter what I was going through or how I was feeling she needed me and that, sometimes only that, forced me to join the land of the living. And if any of you have been around my daughter at all you know it's almost impossible not to smile around her. She's a delight and an integral part of my healing.

She magically started healing this large wound in one moment. One night when I was cuddling her before bed softly crying into her hair, clinging to the child I was allowed to have, she turned and looked at me with a smile and simply said 'My mommy'. In that moment it hit me, I'm still a mom, I still have this beautiful person that I DID carry to term. How could I sit there and think only about what I'd lost when before me was tangible proof of what I had already gained. Losing my baby did not take away my motherhood and that was a lifeline for me. I know I'm lucky there are so many who go through this who don't have another child to come home to and my heart breaks for them. If you are one of those people living with this every day know that you are my hero, your strength to make it through every day is a testament and I don't know if I would be strong enough. Hats off to you ladies (and the partners who support them) may you come through this and get the deepest desires of your hearts.

It took time which I hate, I think one of the worst four letter words I can hear is...wait. I can't stand it, it's so annoying. I don't want to wait I don't want to dwell I want to deal with it, be done and move on. My entire life the Lord has been teaching me to wait, to live in the now, not to think about what could have been but what is. I'm pretty sure I will be learning this right up until the moment when I leave this world, because I just can't stand to wait. This instance was no different. I wanted to be done being sad, done crying, done cursing every pregnant woman or woman with an infant who happened to cross my path. It wasn't their fault that I didn't have my baby, they didn't have healthy children to spite me. Knowing that and feeling that were two different things.

Which leads into the next integral part of my healing. While the time from the first part to this next part is a series of months it was this last bit that helped me realize I was ready to move on. Coupled with the time in between these two moments I think I'm at a healthier place regarding my loss. I'm never, ever, going to forget but at this point I'm really ready to move passed it.

It's funny how my daughter started the healing and my niece is the one who finished it. She was born three weeks before what would have been my due date. I'll admit when I first saw her all I could think of was, why does she get to be here and my baby isn't? Immediately I knew, though, that I was never going to blame my niece for being born. It's not her fault and again she is not here out of spite. There was nothing that was going to be gained by me disregarding this beautiful infant just because I did not have my own. That said I wasn't at the point where my feelings matched what I knew. I would hold her and I knew I loved her, but it was like it didn't reach my heart. The pain and grief were preventing me from treating her as I had her older brother and sister when they had been born.

Then around Easter when she was about 3 months old, it happened, and I didn't even realize it until I was in the moment. To give some back story since my older niece was born I've pretty much done the same thing whenever I'm with that family. They come into the room and I go for that baby. I can't help it I love babies, and I love it when they fall asleep on me. It's like they are telling me they trust me enough to just pass out on me. I hadn't even realized I'd never done that until Easter when they arrived and as soon as my sister in law put that car seat down I had to have that baby. I had to hold her and later on, sure enough, she was sleeping on me. I didn't even notice that I was holding her different until my sister in law said something about the fact that all her kids have to sleep on me. That's when I noticed, I wasn't just holding this baby I was enveloping her and kept kissing the top of her head, I was loving her and I wasn't even thinking about my baby. I was just enjoying this child for who she is, it was a beautiful thing. I really felt, in that moment, that the there would always be a scar but finally the scar was at a point where it was just that, with no residual pain.

Of course I'll always know that I could have had a child the same age as my niece but I really feel that I'm not going to be putting that on my niece. She is an individual who had nothing to do with my loss and that is how I'm going to treat her.

So that's a, somewhat, short form version of my miscarriage and how that has shaped my outlook on life. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I can actually talk about it with out that sharp pain my heart, in fact the more I talk about it the better I feel. :)

Here's a picture of some of the flowers we received after, we really are blessed with very good friends :)
